From Disney classics, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic, households around the world love the family-friendly content of Disney+. In fact, Disney+ has become one of the most popular streaming services in the world, with over 150 million subscribers

While Disney+ was initially known for its kid-friendly programming, the platform has expanded to include a wider range of movie and TV ratings, including PG-13 (and even a few R-rated) Marvel movies and TV-MA series. If your little ones aren’t ready for bigger adventures and more frightening scenes — or you simply want to filter out language and violence — the Disney+ parental controls are an important tool to make sure your child has a safe viewing experience, while still allowing you to enjoy the platform’s full content library.

Setting up proper parental control features gives you, as a parent, better peace of mind and helps create age-appropriate viewing experiences for young children. With the right parental control settings in place, families can enjoy Disney+ content without worrying about inappropriate material reaching younger viewers.

What Inappropriate Content Might Be on Disney+?

Although Disney+ markets itself as a family-friendly streaming service, the platform now hosts content that may not be suitable for all ages. For example, some Star Wars content includes battle scenes and darker elements that parents might prefer to screen before allowing children to watch.

Also, many Marvel movies carry PG-13 ratings due to Action Violence, Intense Themes, and Mild Language that could be unsuitable for younger viewers. Disney+ also has a few R-rated films, including superhero movies tangential to the MCU, which include:

The platform has also added TV-MA content, including more mature series and documentaries from National Geographic that cover more intense topics, like “Hurricane Katrina: Race Against Time” (2025). As with superhero films, the MCU also has mature content on Disney+, including:

Unlike pirated content with no parental controls, legitimate streaming services like Disney+ provide tools to help you manage what

How To Set Up Disney+ Parental Controls

Disney+ offers several parental control features that work together to create a safer viewing environment for children. These tools range from activating Junior Mode to setting content restrictions and implementing PIN protection for added security.

How To Activate Junior Mode

Activating Junior Mode is one of the most effective ways to make sure your children only have access to age-appropriate content. This feature automatically filters out mature content and uses a simpler interface designed specifically for young children.

To create a new profile with Junior Mode:

  1. Open the Disney+ app on your iPhone, Android device, or web browser
  2. Navigate to your account settings by clicking on your profile icon
  3. Choose “Add Profile” to create a new profile
  4. Select an appropriate avatar for the child’s profile
  5. Create a profile name
    • NOTE:  Profile names can not be longer than 30 characters
  6. Under “Parental Controls,” toggle to Junior Mode setting to “On”
  7. Save your changes to complete the profile creation process

To enable Junior Mode on an existing profile:

  1. Open the Disney+ app on your iPhone, Android device, or web browser
  2. Navigate to your account settings by clicking on your profile icon
  3. Select “Edit Profiles”
  4. Select the profile you would like to set to Junior Mode
    • NOTE:  The primary profile cannot be set to Junior Mode
  5. Under “Parental Controls,” toggle the Junior Mode setting to “On”
  6. To exit the Edit Profiles page, select “Done”

How To Set Content Restrictions for a Profile

Content rating restrictions allow parents to set specific age ratings that determine what Disney+ content appears on each profile. This helps make sure that each family member has the perfect viewing experience suitable for their age.

To change or set a profile’s content ratings, follow the step-by-step process below using the Disney+ app or your web browser:

  1. Navigate to “Edit Profiles” and select the profile you want to modify
  2. Under “Parental Controls,” select “Content Rating”
  3. Enter your password
  4. Choose an appropriate age rating and click “Save”

How To Enable Profile PIN Protection

A profile PIN is a four-digit code needed to switch between Disney+ accounts. This prevents children from logging into adult profiles or accessing content you don’t want them to see.

On the Disney+ app or web browser:

  1. Go to your Disney+ profiles and select “Edit Profiles”
  2. Select the adult profile you want to protect with a PIN
  3. Go to “Parental Controls” and select “Profile PIN”
  4. Enter your password and select “Continue”
  5. Create a secure 4-digit pin and click “Save”

How To Enable Kid-Proof Exit on Disney+

The Kid-Proof Exit feature on Disney+ is designed to prevent children from exiting Junior Mode and accessing other profiles. The feature has the user complete a small challenge before being able to continue. This feature is particularly useful for younger children who might accidentally navigate away from appropriate content.

To activate Disney+’s Kid-Proof Exit feature:

  1. Open the Disney+ app on your iPhone, Android device, or web browser
  2. Navigate to your profile and select “Edit Profiles”
  3. Toggle Kid-Proof Exit to “On”
  4. Enter your password to confirm your changes

How To Restrict New Disney+ Profiles

Setting restrictions on new profiles in your Disney+ account helps you keep your setup the way you like it. More importantly, it prevents children from circumventing the restrictions placed on other profiles.

To restrict the creation of new profiles, enter the Disney+ app or access your account through a web browser:

  1. Navigate to your account
  2. Under “Settings”, toggle “Restrict Profile Creation” to “On”
  3. Enter your password and select “Continue”

How To Disable Autoplay on Disney+

Disabling autoplay prevents the platform from automatically showing previews or starting the next episode or movie. This gives you, as a parent, more control over screen time and content consumption.

  1. Access your Disney+ account
  2. Go to your profile and select “Edit Profiles”
  3. Choose the profile you wish to modify
  4. Toggle “Autoplay” to “Off”
    • NOTE: On your web browser, toggle “Background Video” to “Off” as well
  5. Select “Done”
  6. Repeat these steps for all relevant profiles

Additional Parental Control Tips for Disney+

In addition to basic parental control settings, there are easy, hands-on strategies parents can implement to teach their children safe streaming habits. With a little guidance, your children will have an easier time following the rules and know why they’re in place. Here’s what we recommend to get started:

  • Conduct Regular Reviews: Review your child’s account every so often to make sure they haven’t accessed anything they’re not supposed to. Disney+ doesn’t have a traditional history list, but you can look at your child’s “Continue Watching” section and any Watchlists they’ve made. To uphold privacy and trust, make sure they know what the expectations are ahead of time, and tell them that you’ll be checking periodically.
  • Manage Screen Time: Set up viewing schedules and screen time limits outside of the Disney+ platform. This may include certain limits on continuous screen time or certain times of day when streaming is or isn’t allowed.
  • Have Open and Honest Communication: Discuss appropriate content choices with your children. Explain why certain restrictions are in place and how they’re in your child’s best interest.
  • Go Beyond Disney+: Be sure to set up kids’ profiles, PINs, and content restrictions across all your family’s streaming services, not just Disney+. Whatever streaming platforms you have — and especially when considering new ones — be sure to follow StreamSafely’s safe streaming tips.
  • Prioritize Legal Devices and Online Security: Avoid illegal streaming devices, which often lack proper parental controls and safety features. Help keep your kids safe online by discussing the risks of pirated content and emphasizing safe online habits.

How To Monitor and Adjust Disney+ Settings Over Time

As your children grow up, it’s natural that your parental control settings will change too. Be sure to review your Disney+ profiles and content restrictions periodically to make sure they remain appropriate for your child in each stage of life. Remember, Disney+ is always adding new content, so it’s important to check that existing restrictions still provide the protection you want.

Whether it’s every few months or once a year, review your family’s streaming service parental controls, including Disney+ or any other platforms you use. This regular assessment can help make sure your children are still accessing age-appropriate content even as they develop new interests and reach different maturity levels.
