Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

The Knives Out franchise began as writer-director Rian Johnson’s passionate homage to classic whodunit mysteries. In a 2019 interview with HeyUGuys for the franchise’s first film, “Knives Out,” Johnson states that he grew up reading Agatha Christie’s books and that the genre was one he “always wanted to attack.” The first film was produced by Lionsgate and introduced audiences to Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, a Southern gentleman detective with an uncanny ability to unravel the most complex family secrets and hidden motives.

The original film had a massive, star-studded cast including Chris Evans, fresh off his final performance as Captain America in “Avengers: Endgame” that same year; Ana de Armas, during her global blow up preceding her Marilyn Monroe film “Blonde”; and Hollywood heavyweight Jamie Lee Curtis. With such star power and an incredible plot, “Knives Out” became both a critical success and a commercial powerhouse, earning over $25 million at the box office in its opening days and eventually amassing $312 million worldwide against a modest $40 million budget.

The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Its success spawned the 2022 sequel “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” on Netflix, which transported Blanc to a Greek island setting for another star-studded ensemble mystery, now with Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe, and more. “Glass Onion” proved equally popular, earning a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes

“Wake Up Dead Man” promises to push the boundaries even further, with Tudum describing it as “Blanc’s most dangerous case yet.” The new film is expected to be both the “darkest” and “funniest” installment yet, according to Inverse and the BBC, respectively. Each Knives Out entry is a standalone mystery, so you don’t need to see the other two before enjoying the third, but we at StreamSafely highly recommend that you do. If you love mysteries, we know you’ll enjoy the ride!

1. Knives Out (2019): When a famous crime novelist dies under mysterious circumstances, his dysfunctional family gathers for the reading of his will. But when detective Benoit Blanc arrives to investigate, he discovers that everyone has a motive, everyone has a secret, and everyone is a suspect.

2. Glass Onion (2022): On a tech billionaire’s private Greek island, a murder mystery game becomes all too real when someone actually dies. Detective Benoit Blanc must peel back the layers of deception among the eccentric guests as everyone’s paradise becomes their prison.

“Knives Out” is available to stream on Prime Video, and “Glass Onion” is available to stream on Netflix.

Director: Rian Johnson

Raised in San Clemente, California, Rian Johnson established himself in the industry with his breakthrough debut “Brick” (2005), a noir mystery set in a California high school that earned 11 awards across the U.S., U.K., and Canada. His next major directorial role was with “Looper” in 2012.

Unfortunately, Johnson is widely known for what many consider a mishandling of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (2017) and the fan backlash criticizing his departure from established genre tropes. While experimenting with a well-known franchise may have been seen by some as a faux pas, reinventing the murder mystery genre with an all-new franchise has resolidified him as a director worth his chops.
