Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man(2026)

The Peaky Blinders weren’t born on a Netflix soundstage. The real-life gang first emerged in the grime and poverty of late 19th-century Birmingham, England, where young working-class men turned to crime to survive. Known for their sharp attire — peaked flat caps, tailored waistcoats, and silk scarves — they controlled the streets through intimidation, violence, illegal gambling, and racketeering.

While the gang’s name is widely believed to derive from their distinctive peaked caps and the Birmingham slang term “blinder” for a good-looking man, another popular origin from the show is that members sewed razor blades into their cap peaks to blind their enemies. While the latter is likely an urban legend, the reputation and story stuck.

The show’s creator, Steven Knight, a Birmingham native, drew on this real history — and his own family connection to it — when he conceived the Netflix series. Knight has spoken openly about how his parents’ stories of immaculately dressed men with guns in their pockets planted the seed for the show. Three of Knight’s own great uncles were members of the Sheldon clan, who were the inspiration for the Shelby family in the show.

Peaky Blinders” premiered on BBC Two in September 2013 and ran for six seasons, distributed in the U.S. and worldwide by Netflix. It followed the fictional Shelby clan from the ashes of the Great War through the rise of European fascism.

“Peaky Blinder: The Immortal Man” moves the storyline into World War II. Set in 1940 Birmingham — seven years after the events of the final series — the film centers on Tommy Shelby living in self-imposed exile on a decaying rural estate, haunted by loss and refusing to engage with the world he helped shape. That changes when his estranged son Duke Shelby, now running the Peaky Blinders gang with unchecked brutality, becomes entangled in a real historical Nazi scheme known as Operation Bernhard: a plan to flood Britain with counterfeit currency and destabilize its economy from within.

The film is written by Knight and directed by Tom Harper, who directed episodes of the first season of the original series. Along with Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, returning cast members include Sophie Rundle, Ned Dennehy, Packy Lee, Ian Peck, and Stephen Graham, joined by new additions Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, Jay Lycurgo, and Barry Keoghan.

“Peaky Blinders” is available to stream on Netflix.

British director Tom Harper first connected with the Peaky Blinders world when he helmed episodes of the show’s debut season back in 2013 — a collaboration that paved the way for his eventual return to direct the feature film. He also famously directed the hit BBC miniseries “War & Peace” (2016).

His breakout moment on the big screen came with “Wild Rose” (2018), a critically acclaimed showbiz drama starring Jessie Buckley, which earned a BAFTA nomination. The film was followed by “The Aeronauts” (2019), an Amazon Original adventure starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones. He also directed the Netflix action thriller “Heart of Stone” (2023) starring Gal Gadot.
