Director Nia DaCosta takes the helm from Danny Boyle for this second installment of the new trilogy, promising a uniquely disturbing vision that explores the darkest corners of humanity when civilization collapses. DaCosta’s breakthrough came with her 2018 feature debut “Little Woods,” a crime drama starring Tessa Thompson (“Thor: Ragnarok,” 2017) and Lily James (“Cinderella,” 2015).
Her second feature, 2021’s “Candyman” — co-written and co-produced by Jordan Peele — became a historic achievement when it opened at No. 1 at the U.S. box office, making DaCosta the first Black woman director to debut in the top spot.
