| Summary | On her birthday, Kara Zor-El’s galactic joyride turns into a violent interstellar quest for justice when a young warrior named Ruthye crosses her path. |
She survived the destruction of Krypton, crashed the Fortress of Solitude, and stole the spotlight from Superman in his very own movie. Now, with the โSupergirlโ movie hitting theaters in June, Kara Zor-El is finally ready for her solo moment. Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock, this DCU solo debut takes the Girl of Steel far from Earth and into the deep reaches of the universe, when her birthday celebrations turn into a quest for justice. Fans exploded with excitement during Alcockโs scene-stealing cameo in โSupermanโ (2025), and anticipation has only grown!
Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Supergirl (2026)
Supergirl โ Kara Zor-El, Supermanโs Kryptonian cousin โ has been a cornerstone of DC Comics lore since her debut in 1959โs Action Comics #252. Over the decades, her character has appeared in animated series, comic book runs, and feature films, perhaps most famously in the 1984 theatrical release โSupergirlโ starring Helen Slater.ย
Nowadays, Supergirl is synonymous with the long-running live-action television series โSupergirlโ that aired from 2015 to 2021. The TV show โ not to be confused with the 2026 film โ starred Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers and began its run on CBS before moving to The CW, where it ran for six seasons and crossed over with the Arrowverse. The series and the 2026 film are entirely separate productions set in different universes, so viewers new to the character donโt need to watch the show before heading to theaters this summer.
How The Supergirl (2026) Movie Came To Be
The 2026 film was born out of James Gunn and Peter Safranโs sweeping reboot of the DC Universe. At the DC slate reveal in January 2023, Gunn announced the project would adapt Tom King’s 2021โ22 comic book miniseries โSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrowโ that reimagines Kara as a flawed, complex character rather than a squeaky-clean hero. โI love his take on these characters,โ Gunn said. โHe just turns them slightly to be something very unique.โ
Writer Ana Nogueira was hired to pen the screenplay back in November 2023, and Australian director Craig Gillespie was in talks to direct in April 2024.
Milly Alcock had already been confirmed as Kara Zor-El in January 2024, and appeared briefly โ just 12 seconds โ at the end of โSupermanโ (2025). The film is the second entry in the DCUโs cinematic slate of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which also includes the 2025 โSupermanโ film starring David Corenswet.
All About Supergirl (2026)
She didnโt come to save the day. She came to party.
On her birthday, Kara Zor-El โ a Kryptonian who survived the death of her planet โ sets off on a galactic joyride with her dog, Krypto. But when fate drops a young warrior named Ruthye into her path, Kara Zor-El finds herself on a violent interstellar quest for revenge across the cosmos.
Director: Craig Gillespie
Craig Gillespie was born in Sydney, Australia, and studied illustration and advertising at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
His breakthrough in narrative film came with the dramedy โLars and the Real Girlโ (2007), starring Ryan Gosling. From there, Gillespie built an impressive roster that includes โFright Nightโ (2011), โThe Finest Hoursโ (2016), and most notably โI, Tonyaโ (2017), which garnered an Oscar win for Allison Janney for her role as LaVona and a nomination for Margot Robbie, who played the titular Tonya.ย
Cast & Crew
Milly Alcock stars as Supergirl. The Australian actress first captured global attention as the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBOโs โHouse of the Dragonโ (2022-present), for which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series by the Criticsโ Choice Television Awards. She has since been seen opposite Meghann Fahy and Julianne Moore in Netflixโs limited series โSirensโ (2025).
Alongside her, British actress Eve Ridley plays Ruthye Marye Knoll. At just 14 years old, Ridley is already a remarkable screen presence, having appeared in Netflixโs โ3 Body Problemโ (2024-present), the fourth season of โThe Witcherโ (2025), and numerous voice roles, including in โPeppa Pigโ (2204-present) and the animated series โIsadora Moonโ (2023-present).
Perhaps most intriguingly, Jason Momoa makes his debut as Lobo โ a wildly different character from the Aquaman he played in the old DC Extended Universe. Lobo and Aquaman exist in entirely separate fictional universes: Momoaโs Arthur Curry was part of the Zack Snyder-era DCEU, which has since been rebooted, while this Lobo is a brand-new portrayal within James Gunnโs DCU, with no connection whatsoever to Atlantis or the sea.
