Supergirl — Kara Zor-El, Superman’s Kryptonian cousin — has been a cornerstone of DC Comics lore since her debut in 1959’s Action Comics #252. Over the decades, her character has appeared in animated series, comic book runs, and feature films, perhaps most famously in the 1984 theatrical release “Supergirl” starring Helen Slater.
Nowadays, Supergirl is synonymous with the long-running live-action television series “Supergirl” that aired from 2015 to 2021. The TV show — not to be confused with the 2026 film — starred Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers and began its run on CBS before moving to The CW, where it ran for six seasons and crossed over with the Arrowverse. The series and the 2026 film are entirely separate productions set in different universes, so viewers new to the character don’t need to watch the show before heading to theaters this summer.
How The Supergirl (2026) Movie Came To Be
The 2026 film was born out of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s sweeping reboot of the DC Universe. At the DC slate reveal in January 2023, Gunn announced the project would adapt Tom King’s 2021–22 comic book miniseries “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” that reimagines Kara as a flawed, complex character rather than a squeaky-clean hero. “I love his take on these characters,” Gunn said. “He just turns them slightly to be something very unique.”
Writer Ana Nogueira was hired to pen the screenplay back in November 2023, and Australian director Craig Gillespie was in talks to direct in April 2024.
Milly Alcock had already been confirmed as Kara Zor-El in January 2024, and appeared briefly — just 12 seconds — at the end of “Superman” (2025). The film is the second entry in the DCU’s cinematic slate of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, which also includes the 2025 “Superman” film starring David Corenswet.

Craig Gillespie was born in Sydney, Australia, and studied illustration and advertising at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
His breakthrough in narrative film came with the dramedy “Lars and the Real Girl” (2007), starring Ryan Gosling. From there, Gillespie built an impressive roster that includes “Fright Night” (2011), “The Finest Hours” (2016), and most notably “I, Tonya” (2017), which garnered an Oscar win for Allison Janney for her role as LaVona and a nomination for Margot Robbie, who played the titular Tonya.
Cast & Crew
Milly Alcock stars as Supergirl. The Australian actress first captured global attention as the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s “House of the Dragon” (2022-present), for which she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series by the Critics’ Choice Television Awards. She has since been seen opposite Meghann Fahy and Julianne Moore in Netflix’s limited series “Sirens” (2025).
Alongside her, British actress Eve Ridley plays Ruthye Marye Knoll. At just 14 years old, Ridley is already a remarkable screen presence, having appeared in Netflix’s “3 Body Problem” (2024-present), the fourth season of “The Witcher” (2025), and numerous voice roles, including in “Peppa Pig” (2204-present) and the animated series “Isadora Moon” (2023-present).
Perhaps most intriguingly, Jason Momoa makes his debut as Lobo — a wildly different character from the Aquaman he played in the old DC Extended Universe. Lobo and Aquaman exist in entirely separate fictional universes: Momoa’s Arthur Curry was part of the Zack Snyder-era DCEU, which has since been rebooted, while this Lobo is a brand-new portrayal within James Gunn’s DCU, with no connection whatsoever to Atlantis or the sea.
