Everything You Should Know Before Seeing Wicked: For Good

The Wicked phenomenon began by flipping the classic story of The Wizard of Oz on its head. From a novel to a groundbreaking Broadway musical and now an ambitious two-part box office hit, the story of Wicked has made an impact that has changed the culture for good.

The Novel: Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West

Before the publication of “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West” in 1995, author Gregory Maguire was already an established writer known for his fairytale-like children’s stories like “The Lightning Time” and “The Dream Stealer.” The Wicked novel was Maguire’s first work published for adults.

The idea emerged from his fascination with reimagining classic fairy tale villains, particularly exploring what circumstances might have turned her into the Wicked Witch of the West in Oz, and continued into later works like “Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister” from the classic tale of Cinderella and “Mirror Mirror” inspired by Snow White. Maguire crafted a complex political allegory set in an alternate Oz filled with religious tensions, animal persecution, and social upheaval. The book received critical praise for its sophisticated themes and literary depth, though its darker content and mature and sexual subject matter made it distinctly different from later adaptations.

While subsequent stage and film versions focus on friendship and self-acceptance, Maguire’s novel explores themes of terrorism, religious extremism, and political corruption with an unflinching adult perspective. The original work contains graphic violence, sexual content, and philosophical complexity that later family-friendly adaptations deliberately avoided. Maguire continued the story through three sequels: “Son of a Witch” (2005), “A Lion Among Men” (2008), and “Out of Oz” (2011), each maintaining the series’ mature themes and political commentary. Years later, Maguire wrote a new spinoff trilogy and a prequel, bringing the total Wicked canon up to eight separate novels.

Wicked: The Musical

The transformation from novel to musical began when composer Stephen Schwartz and book writer Winnie Holzman recognized the theatrical potential in Maguire’s story, though they significantly lightened the tone and restructured the story. Producer Marc Platt brought together his creative team with director Joe Mantello, and the original San Francisco production featured Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. The stage show’s early development included several elements that were ultimately cut, including a powerful scene where Elphaba mourns the presumed death of Dr. Dillamond, wearing her iconic color, black, on stage for the first time.

After its successful run in San Francisco, “Wicked” transferred to Broadway’s Gershwin Theatre in October 2003, where it quickly became a cultural phenomenon, despite initially mixed reviews. The production earned ten Tony nominations but controversially lost Best Musical to “Avenue Q,” sparking significant debate within the theater community and leading to reforms in how musicals conduct awards campaigns, as documented by Broadway YouTuber Wait in the Wings. Despite this setback, “Wicked” won three Tony Awards and has since become one of Broadway’s longest-running and highest-grossing productions.

The Movie: Wicked, Part I

Rumors of Universal Pictures’ film adaptation began as early as 2010. The production spent years cycling through different rumored cast members and directors, including Stephen Daldry, before Jon M. Chu took over as director in February 2021. The casting of Cynthia Erivo was hailed as a significant commitment to diverse representation, especially in a story with a character so defined by the color of their skin. Chu’s production emphasized practical sets over digital environments, with massive constructed sets at Sky Studios Elstree, including Munchkinland, the Emerald City, and Shiz University, complete with a library with a massive, rotating bookcase.

“Wicked,” Part One, is available to stream on Prime Video. Covering the events of the first act of the Broadway show, it is necessary to see “Wicked,” Part One, before seeing “Wicked: For Good.”

Director: Jon M. Chu

Born in Palo Alto, California, Jon M. Chu gained recognition through his breakthrough work directing the dance films “Step Up 2 The Streets” (2008) and “Step Up 3” (2010). His career evolved significantly with the success of “Crazy Rich Asians” (2018), which earned him widespread recognition for directing the first major Hollywood studio film featuring an all-Asian cast in contemporary times, and “In the Heights” (2021), his adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning musical featuring a Latino cast.

Movie Plot

Following her defiant stand against the Wizard, Elphaba has become Oz’s most wanted fugitive — the Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda, within the glittering walls of the Emerald City, weighs her loyalty to Elphaba against her position of privilege and influence within the corrupt regime. When Dorothy’s arrival sets the final act in motion, both witches must confront the consequences of their choices and live with the reality that follows for good.

Soundtrack

“Wicked: For Good” will include all the songs of the stage musical’s second act as well as two new songs. “In addition to two brand new songs, there is a lot that’s new in several other existing songs,” says composer Stephen Schwartz in a statement reported by MSN. “So not only listeners coming to the score for the first time, but longtime fans of the original Broadway cast album will have a great deal to discover.”
