The streets of Philadelphia are about to become the backdrop for one of the most anticipated crime thriller of 2025. When an FBI agent’s world collides with a seemingly ordinary family man’s dark secret, the line between hunter and hunted becomes dangerously blurred. The “Task” miniseries promises to deliver the same unrestrained intensity that has made HBO the gold standard for premium TV. From Emmy-nominated creator Brad Ingelsby comes a seven-episode series that will leave viewers questioning everything they think they know about suburbia and the inner workings of federal law enforcement.

Everything You Need to Know About “Task”

“Task” is the latest project from Brad Ingelsby, the Emmy-nominated writer and creator behind the critically acclaimed “Mare of Easttown” (2021), starring Kate Winslet. Ingelsby’s previous work established him as a master of small-town crime dramas, and his new series continues this tradition with another look into working-class communities, the complex individuals who inhabit them, and the secrets they hide.

With Hollywood flooded with sequels and reboots, this new miniseries is an original concept by Ingelsby himself. Set in Philadelphia’s suburbs, Ingelsby shines a light on the hidden tensions that simmer beneath seemingly peaceful neighborhoods and dials the drama up to 11. HBO green-lit the project in June 2023, recognizing Ingelsby’s extreme talent for crafting character-driven stories that resonate with both critics and audiences.

The series has an impressive ensemble cast led by Mark Ruffalo. Ruffalo takes on the role of Tom, a Philadelphia-based FBI agent thrust back into active fieldwork. Interestingly, Michael Keaton was originally considered for the lead role before scheduling conflicts — presumably with “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (2024) — led to Ruffalo taking the helm. Tom Pelphrey, known for his performance as Ben Davis in “Ozark,” Season 3, plays the central villain: a seeming ordinary family man who heads a spree of violent robberies. With economic strain hitting many rural and suburban families across the country, this Philadelphia crime drama feels particularly relevant as Ingelsby shows us how moral complexities facing working-class American families can unfold when pushed to their absolute limit.

Series Plot

A series of violent home invasions has shattered the peace and quiet of Philadelphia’s working-class neighborhoods. An FBI agent, played by Mark Ruffalo, finds himself pulled from his desk job to lead a specialized task force dedicated to stopping these brutal robberies before more families become victims. However, his investigation takes an unexpected turn when the trail leads to an unlikely suspect — a seemingly ordinary family man with a secret double life. As the task force closes in, both hunter and hunted must confront the lengths they’re willing to go to protect the ones they love.

Release Date & Episode Count

“Task” is scheduled to premiere on September 7. The series is slotted for seven episodes, but no titles or episode lengths have been disclosed yet. Inglesby’s previous series, “Mare of Easttown” (2021) also has seven episodes and a similar premise, with each episode running about an hour in length. The TV series will be available on Crave.

Cast & Crew

The series is headlined by acclaimed actor Mark Ruffalo, widely recognized for his role as Bruce Banner/the Hulk, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Before joining the Avengers, Ruffalo made his mark in classics such as ”Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004) alongside Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, the beloved rom-com ”13 Going on 30” (2004) with Jennifer Garner, and ”Just Like Heaven” (2005) opposite Reese Witherspoon. He also earned critical acclaim for his performance as Paul in ”The Kids Are All Right” (2010). More recently, Ruffalo has appeared in the Academy Award-winning film ”Poor Things” (2023) and the sci-fi feature ”Mickey 17” (2024).

Leading the crime spree is Robbie, played by Tom Pelphrey who is best known as Ben David in “Ozark,” Season 3, and as Ward Meachum in Marvel’s “Iron Fist” (2017). Continuing his association with both Marvel and HBO, he also played Don Crowder in Max’s “Love & Death” (2023) opposite Elizabeth Olsen, who played Wanda Maximoff/the Scarlet Witch in the MCU.
