Everything You Need To Know About the Wonder Man Miniseries
“Wonder Man” is an all-new miniseries set to debut on Disney+ as part of the MCU’s Phase Six under Marvel’s “Spotlight” banner. The Spotlight banner was designed specifically to break free from the greater MCU continuity and allow viewers to jump into all-new stories without having to rely on past installments, canon events, or character references.
The series follows Hollywood actor Simon Williams, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who gains superhuman abilities and transforms into the superhero Wonder Man. This could be Marvel’s first deep dive into the entertainment industry itself, as speculated by Comic Book Resources, giving us a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood with no shortage of superhero action.
Wonder Man originated in Marvel Comics in 1964, created by Stan Lee, Don Heck, and Jack Kirby. Unlike the new portrayal, he first appeared in The Avengers #9 as the villain. Simon Williams began as the son of industrialist Sanford Williams, who inherited his father’s weapons manufacturing company, Williams Innovations, but faced financial ruin when unable to compete with Stark Industries. Seething, desperate, and blaming the Starks for his predicament, Simon turns to Baron Zemo, a deranged Nazi scientist, who transforms him into Wonder Man using ionic energy. They planned to use his new super status to infiltrate and destroy the Avengers from within, along with Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.
Over the decades, the character evolved from villain to conflicted hero to full Avengers member, with his comic books often leaning heavily into themes of redemption, identity, and the price of power. As a trained stuntman and actor as well as an industrialist, his character has consistently maintained connections to both the entertainment world and the superhero community.
The series comes from creator and showrunner Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously directed “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (2021) for Marvel Studios, and has been in the works since 2022. After experiencing delays due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, the miniseries is almost here! Departing from the character’s wealthy and villainous origins, Abdul-Mateen’s Simon Williams is a struggling actor. It’s unclear how he’ll get his superpowers and transform into Wonder Man in this new iteration, but we at StreamSafely cannot wait to find out!
Plot
Not much is officially known about the plot of Marvel’s Wonder Man miniseries, but it’s set to reimagine the character from the ground up, featuring a completely new origin story. In October 2024, Marvel Entertainment released a sneak peek of upcoming projects, which showed struggling actor Simon Williams auditioning for the on-screen part of Wonder Man.
It’s unclear where Williams will get his powers and what threats he’ll face, but we’re certain that Disney is serving up a hilarious meta commentary on superheroes and the entertainment industry — with all the action and explosions Marvel is known for.
Release Date & Episode Count
“Wonder Man” is set to be released on Disney+ sometime in December 2025, but no exact date has been announced. The miniseries will consist of eight episodes, down from the previously reported 10, each running 30 minutes.
Wonder Man, Official Trailer
Disney and Marvel have yet to release an official trailer for “Wonder Man.” However, Marvel Entertainment released a “Look Ahead” teaser in 2024, with footage from the upcoming MCU series. Then, in July, Disney Plus released another 60-second “Coming Soon” clip of all its upcoming shows and properties. Marvel has already made an impression with only a few seconds to go off of, and at StreamSafely, we are absolutely chomping at the bit for more!

Cast & Crew
Leading the cast is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, aka Wonder Man. Abdul-Mateen has already proven his talents in superhero films, appearing as Black Manta in both “Aquaman” (2018) and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (2023). In 2020, he won a Primetime Emmy for his portrayal of Cal Abar, aka Dr. Manhattan, in the HBO TV series “Watchmen.”
He’ll be playing opposite Ben Kingsley, who has over 150 credits to his name and an Oscar for Best Actor in his titular role in the 1983 film, “Gandhi.” Kingsley has already made his MCU entrance as Trevor Slattery, aka the Mandarin, in “Iron Man 3” (2013) and “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (2021). However, given that this is one of Marvel’s Spotlight features, it’s unlikely that viewers will need to know much about his previous roles or past plots to enjoy “Wonder Man.” Most recently, Kingsley starred as Ibrahim in Netflix’s “The Thursday Murder Club” (2025).
