Countless heroes, three universes — and one towering villain ready to claim it all. Marvel’s “Avengers: Doomsday” (2026) lands in theaters this December, and the buzz around the film and its gigantic ensemble is deafening. Robert Downey Jr. is trading Iron Man’s armor for Doctor Doom’s metal mask as the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the Wakandans, and the X-Men race to stop him while the multiverse comes apart. Our team has been counting down the days right alongside every fan.
At Streamsafely, our goal is to steer viewers toward licensed streaming services and warn them about known pirate sites packed with viruses and scams. With a global event like “Avengers Doomsday” fast approaching, there is sure to be a surge in malicious sites claiming early access or free downloads of earlier installments in order to try to steal your identifying information. Rather than risk your online security or fall prey to deceptive sites, we want fans of every age and every genre to be able to settle in and enjoy the content they love the way it was meant to be seen.
How The MCU Got To Avengers: Doomsday
The Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU, is a shared story told across nearly forty films and a growing list of TV series, all connected so that a hero from one movie can pop up in another.
The Infinity Saga
It all began with “Iron Man” (2008), starring Robert Downey Jr. as billionaire inventor Tony Stark, who builds a flying suit of armor. Over the next four years, Marvel introduced the heroes who would form its founding team: Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the Asgardian god of thunder, in “Thor” (2011); and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a World War II soldier turned super-soldier, in “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011).
Scientist Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who becomes the rampaging Hulk, spy chief Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), the assassin Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and the archer Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) popped up along the way. They all joined forces in “The Avengers” (2012) to stop Thor’s scheming brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston.
Although the first movies culminated in “The Avengers” (2012), the early films also form part of the Infinity Saga, which follows the heroes as they battle the cosmic conqueror Thanos. Adding to the ensemble was Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa in “Black Panther” (2018), which took viewers deep into the hidden African nation of Wakanda. The saga peaked with “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018) and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019).
The Multiverse Saga
The next chapters, Phases Four through Six, are known as the Multiverse Saga. Beginning in 2021, Marvel shifted a large part of its storytelling to Disney+, with series such as “WandaVision” (2021), “Hawkeye” (2021), and “Secret Invasion” (2023). The big idea of the MCU at this point is the notion that many alternate versions of reality exist side by side, each with its own take on familiar heroes.
Phase Five wrapped up with “Thunderbolts*” (2025), and Phase Six began with “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (2025) and builds toward “Avengers: Doomsday” (2026) and “Avengers: Secret Wars” planned for 2027.
What We Know About Avengers: Doomsday
At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, Marvel announced that Robert Downey Jr. would play Doctor Doom, the Fantastic Four’s arch-nemesis, shocking fans who knew him only as the heroic Tony Stark. Kevin Feige summed up the logic in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly by saying, “He played the most iconic hero. Let’s have him play the most iconic villain.”
Doom’s first glimpse came in the mid-credits scene of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” (2025), where a cloaked figure approaches Mr. Fantastic and Sue Storm’s son, holding a silver mask, though his face stays hidden and a title card promises the team’s return.
The marketing has been a spectacle too. Four teasers, each ending with a card saying a hero or team “will return” in the film, played before “Avatar: Fire and Ash” (2025) and went viral, spotlighting Steve Rogers, Thor, the X-Men, and the Wakandans alongside the Fantastic Four. Marvel’s “Doomsday Clock” livestream on YouTube also counts down to opening day in real time.
What to Watch Before Avengers: Doomsday
“Avengers: Doomsday” begins fourteen months after “Thunderbolts*” (2025), as the multiverse collapses and heroes from three universes converge on Doom. From the main MCU Earth come the Avengers, the Wakandans, and the New Avengers.
They’re joined by the Fantastic Four from their own reality and by the original X-Men, mutant heroes first seen in a separate film series that began with “X-Men” (2000). Alongside Downey, expect Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Patrick Stewart, and Ian McKellen among roughly thirty stars.
The film builds on everything since “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), so newcomers will get the most out of it with a little homework. You don’t need to see every title, but revisiting “The Avengers” (2012), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019) will help.
Marvel and Disney have published a complete MCU timeline to guide you, and with a couple of months left, an epic marathon of every film and series is technically possible, provided you still prioritize sleep, work, and sunlight.
